Senior Secondary is the most critical stage of school education because at this level courses are specialized discipline based and content -oriented. It is after 10 years of general studies students opt for Chemistry with an intention to opt for an advanced study in the specific discipline or go for professional courses like engineering, medical, technology and other applied areas. Hence in CBSE Class 11 and 12 the learners should be provided with adequate conceptual background of chemistry which will make them capable to meet the rigours of academic and professional course after the higher secondary stage.
The new syllabus has been created by ensuring that it has sufficient rigour and depth but simultaneously ensuring that the new curriculum is not a drag on the students and at the same time it matches the international level. Chemistry and its knowledge has changes a lot during last 10 years. Many new areas like Natural resources, synthetic materials, industrial chemistry, bio-molecules are coming up prominently hence it is important that they are an integral part of chemistry syllabus of CBSE Class 11 and 12.
Scientific bodies like IUPAC and CGPM have floated new formulations and nomenclature of elements and compounds. Similarly with units of physical quantities and symbols hence it is important that these are incorporated in the new syllabus.
The new syllabus places emphasis on use of new nomenclature, fundamentals, symbols and formulations, practical application of concepts to industry etc Objectives
The curriculum of Chemistry at CBSE Class 11 and 12 aims to:
Encourage understanding of fundamentals in the discipline while ensuring that study of chemistry is exciting for students
Make students skilled enough so that they can study chemistry in future while pursuing academic or professional courses such as engineering, medical, technology etc
Acquaint students with the emerging areas of chemistry and their relevance in future studies along with the application in various spheres of chemical sciences and technology
Prepare learners to face different challenges such as health, environment, nutrition, weather, population, industries and agriculture
Acquaint the learners to various processes used in industries and their technological applications
Help students understand how chemistry is integrated in daily life
Create an interest in students to study chemistry as a subject
Help learners understand the intertwining of chemistry with other disciplines such as Biology, physics, engineering, geology etc
Enhance problem solving skills
